Candice Malcolm: Not right-wing populism, just common sense

A new poll confirms what we’ve known all along: Canadians want newcomers to adopt Canadian values.

Despite the prolonged hand-wringing by media elites, this recent poll — conducted by CROP and commissioned by the French CBC — also confirms that Canadians are open and welcoming towards immigration.

An overwhelming majority — 83% of respondents —believe that other cultures enrich our society and most support the current levels of immigration.

Overlapping with that response, the poll shows that three-quarters of Canadians want newcomers to be screened and vetted to weed out those who possess anti-Canadian attitudes.

The results are clear. Canadians are open to immigration but that openness is not unlimited, nor unconditional.

Canadians will accept immigration so long as immigrants are asked to embrace our way of life.

Canadians want new immigrants to be successful in Canada, just as past waves of immigrants found success and helped to build and improve our great country.

We like our country and want new Canadians to like it, too.

What ought to be conventional wisdom and common sense, however, is being spun by liberal elites in politics and the media.

These elites, once again, insist that there is something controversial, racist or intolerant about Canadian attitudes towards immigration.

This is nonsense.

Canadians should demand that our immigration program be focused on selecting the best people and ensuring they integrate into our society.

After all, the purpose of our immigration program should be to benefit our country.

Unfortunately, with Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the helm, Canada’s priorities have shifted.

Our immigration policy has become about virtue signaling and charity — saying yes to all refugees, even those arriving illegally and those coming from war zones without thorough screening or background checks.

Trudeau’s vision of Canada as the world’s first “post-national state” and a place with “no core identity, no mainstream” is being flat-out rejected by Canadians.

The CROP poll also shows about half of Canadians feel that Muslim immigrants are poorly integrated in Canada, and one in four would support a total ban on immigration from Muslim countries.

Watching the wars of the Middle East spill into Europe alongside mass migration, and seeing some migrants bringing intolerant attitudes and barbaric practices, have surely spooked these Canadians.

Rather than treading carefully and ensuring Canadian values come first, the Trudeau Liberals are taking the opposite approach.

The Liberal “Islamophobia” motion, M103, seeks to carve out special status for Islam in Canada.

When given an opportunity to clarify the cloudy language in the motion — the confusion between protecting the doctrine of Islam as opposed to protecting the rights and freedoms of Muslim people — the Liberals took a pass and insisted on using the politicized term “Islamophobia”.

They are deliberately and cynically playing politics with the sensitive issue of Muslim migration and integration.

They are shamelessly taking advantage of the Quebec mosque tragedy to push through a divisive motion aimed at appeasing hardline Islamists.

Another recent poll, conducted by Forum Research, found that...(READ MORE)
